The Omaha Talons Academy recognize the need for refugee children in the Great City of Omaha to have a more positive definition of themselves. Since 2012, we have provided a unique educational program to South Sudanese young men; a demographic missed by many other Omaha community programs.

Our Story

In just a few short years we have recorded tangible numerous successes, which have positively and directly impacted the entire community of Omaha. Our after school basketball based program has been successful in leveraging and creating opportunities for our young student athletes to get into college. We are building a strong pipeline of servant leaders who recognize themselves as leaders in the community.

“We seek to get more kids into college. And to inspire our youth to recognize themselves as servant leaders committed to giving back to the community.”

— Koang DoLuony, Executive Director

While the organization is open to youth of all nationalities, faiths and gender, it has traditionally been comprised of young men of South Sudanese decent; a demographic missed by many other Omaha community programs. We saw an opportunity to connect with these young people through basketball, and we hope to grow our success to include many more cultures and identities in the Omaha community.

Our Mission

Our mission is to get more kids into college, specifically war torn South Sudanese refugee children in Omaha, Nebraska. We believe basketball provides a rich avenue through which to motivate, mentor and educate young adults

A safe haven for members of the refugee and immigrant community of South Sudan, we have become a space where young people have learned to associate basketball activity with community building and engagement, leadership development, as well as a chance to develop interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in a multicultural society..
